That was the year when Ellie Jean last surfed in a competition, and she had gone on to win her heat that year. As per the World Surf League, she had achieved an average heat score of 8.51 and a wave score of 2.71. While surfing competitively, Ellie Jean had experienced abuse. Opening up in a Yahoo interview, Ellie Jean talks about the entrenched ‘misogyny’ in the sport of surfing. She had to suffer misogyny and abuse in surfing, which is a “male dominated industry.” Surfing is mainly comprised of men, which creates an environment of abuse for women surfers. She describes the industry as being “toxic.” At the pinnacle of her pro surfing career, Ellie Jean had experienced a lot of abuse. Even as she reached the heights of her career in surfing, Ellie Jean had to suffer abuse in this sport dominated by men. She had gone on to describe abuse which was “physical” as well as “mental,” which was “terrible” and “horrifying.”
It took Ellie Jean years to recover from this abuse. She even needed therapy after so many years of abuse in this sport, as it took it’s toll on her health. In an interview with OK! magazine USA “At first I thought and believed I was the luckiest girl in the world to be living such a life, and not long after that, the darker side of the surfing industry soon revealed itself to me, and it was terrifying. Ellie Jean went on to share how “the abuse, both mentally and physically, I endured during my teenage years far away from home with adults in positions of power has haunted me my whole life. It was a pretty horrible time in my life.” Furthermore, Ellie Jean went on to share “I think people in positions of power tend to abuse that power, and I was only a young girl, and it’s taken me a long time to recover.” She feels that despite surfing competitively since around the age of ten, no one had ever “highlighted” to her about the dark side of the industry.
How “it goes back decades, this misogyny and male dominated industry-it’s really toxic. The managers and the people in positions of power really abuse that to, not just me, but a lot of girls. “As much as I loved surfing, I just couldn’t continue.’ She laments that “As much as I loved surfing, I couldn’t continue with the abuse; it almost drove me to suicide, and I was lucky to go get therapy and recover from it”. She went on to share that many girls in the surfing industry have gone through this, unfortunately. After leaving professional surfing, Ellie Jean started to model.
